Wilbers began making YouTube videos consistently about a year ago after crash landing in the wonderful world of makeup tutorials in search of the perfect look for her big day. “I actually started watching videos because I was about to get married and I was going to do my own makeup for my wedding,” Wilbers told me via email. “I wanted my makeup to be perfect so I found Kandee Johnson’s channel and fell in love.”
Anyone who’s ever stumbled upon one of Johnson’s videos has probably gone on a similar video-binge. Her videos are captivating.
Wilbers’ subscribers can easily discern the pure fun she has when making her videos; it’s evident in her every upload that making videos brings her immense joy. Her family is part of the reason she loves YouTube as much as she does and is able to so naturally connect with viewers. “The best part about making videos is sitting down and talking,” she said. “My mom and sister live about four hours away and they are my best friends. I feel like when I make a video, I am chatting with my mom and sister about what we usually talk about anyways!” Watching her videos could make any girl feel like they’re hanging out with Wilbers, having girl talk with a best friend.
The way she just “sits down and talks” is easily one of the most appealing aspects of her channel – Wilbers is so real, so relatable. Her easy-going, laid-back, energetic personality shines through as she reviews new products, displays her newest purchases in a haul, or explains how she achieves her signature taupe-y eye.
Through YouTube, Wilbers has also connected with StyleHaul, YouTube’s largest fashion and beauty network. She’s now a StyleHaul partner along with other well-known YouTubers such as Dulce Candy, Fleur and Carli Bybel.
One of those opportunities was an offer most beauty gurus would give up their favorite MAC lipstick for. “I actually got contacted by the Dr. Oz show to come on their show for a segment,” Wilbers told me. But, unfortunately, it never came to fruition. “The timing didn’t work with my work schedule [so] it didn’t work out.”
Not surprisingly, Wilber’s didn’t seem too bummed. In fact, she never does. Every video she puts out is full of energy, excitement and enthusiasm. And she has, arguably, the biggest, warmest smile in all of YouTube. It’s probably because she’s so enamored with the content she creates and the audience she reaches. “The best part, to me, is connecting with people,” Wilbers said. “I love interacting on YouTube. I actually find that YouTube links people to my other social media like Twitter and Instagram. I feel like there, I can really connect … with people.” Many YouTubers link to their various social media accounts through their channel and encourage subscribers to tweet and message them. Wilbers says it’s the best way to learn about her subscribers and other YouTubers, too.
Some might assume that filming and editing videos, importing and uploading them, and interacting with subscribers on a daily basis would involve a significant amount of work. But Wilbers doesn’t see it that way at all. “YouTube, to me, is purely fun. It has never felt like work,” she said. “If you have a passion for something, it should never feel like work.” Amen, sister.
A moment she can recall enjoying most about the not-work she does on YouTube is filming a video with her hubby almost a year ago. “My husband is actually on TV for a living so I made him come and do “The Husband Tag” with me,” Wilbers told me. “He’s way more comfortable with being in front of the camera than I am! So we had a lot of fun with that.”
(( Here's that video, too. It's actually adorable. You need to see it))
She could have fooled me – Wilbers is so clearly a filming natural. Her videos come from a place of fervor and have hooked thousands of viewers. She seems right at home in front of a camera. And that natural ability to draw in viewers is a true accomplishment for Wilbers. “The biggest success I feel is that I get to connect with people about things I am passionate about,” she said. “I love sharing that with people.”
